8. Cork and Wood Combo Notice Board

Sometimes you need to pin things up rather than clip or write them. Combining a cork panel with a wooden frame gives you the tack-friendly surface of a classic notice board with the warmth of timber around it.
Materials: a roll of cork (usually sold in 1/4-inch thickness), a plywood backing, four wood frame strips, spray adhesive, and a staple gun.
How to build it: Cut the plywood to size, then cut the cork slightly larger and trim it to fit once it’s glued down — this gives you a cleaner edge. Spray adhesive on both surfaces, press the cork into place, and weight it with books for an hour. Build the frame around the perimeter with mitered corners, gluing and nailing as you go. Add two hangers on the back.
Time: about ninety minutes plus drying. Difficulty: beginner.
Customization: Paint the frame, then add a strip of chalkboard paint directly onto a section of the cork for a hybrid write-and-pin surface.
