3. Magnetic Wooden Grocery List Board

3
This one earns its keep. A magnetic board lets you stick up a notepad, a photo, a takeout menu, or a coupon — and it looks far warmer than a plain metal sheet.

Materials: a 1×4 frame board, a piece of 24-gauge sheet metal cut to fit, a thin wood panel or hardboard backing, construction adhesive, and strong magnets. If you’d rather skip the metal, a sheet of galvanized steel from the hardware store works too.

How to build it: Cut the wood to build a shallow box — sides plus a back. Lay the sheet metal inside and secure it with construction adhesive, weighting it down while it cures. Sand and finish the wood before assembly so you don’t have to worry about drips on the metal. Add a small wooden ledge at the bottom to hold a pad of paper and a couple of pens.

Time: about an hour of hands-on work, plus adhesive curing time. Difficulty: beginner.

Display idea: Hang it beside the refrigerator at counter height so you can jot items down the moment you notice you’re out of something.

💡 Pro Tip: Buy a set of rare-earth magnets and glue small wooden buttons to their faces. You get custom, wood-toned magnets that match the board instead of mismatched plastic ones.
