5. Rustic Recipe Card Display Board

Handwritten family recipes deserve better than a drawer. A wooden recipe display board keeps the card you’re cooking from propped against the backsplash where it collects grease splatter.

Materials: a 1×6 board cut to about 18 inches, a wooden clothespin or a strip of trim to create a ledge, wood glue, small nails, and stain or food-safe oil finish.

How to build it: Cut the board to length and sand the edges until they’re smooth to the touch. Attach a narrow strip of trim along the bottom to form a ledge, and glue a wooden clothespin or a small clip near the top. Seal the whole thing with a wipe-on finish — a food-safe oil like mineral oil or a beeswax blend works nicely in a kitchen. Mount it with a sawtooth hanger.

Display idea: Position it to the side of the stove, not directly above it. Heat and steam will warp a thin board over time.

Budget alternative: A single cedar shingle or a scrap of barn wood, sanded and oiled, costs almost nothing and has more character than a new board.
