4. Sweater Snowman

Upcycling an old sweater into a snowman gives you a cozy, textured decoration that feels like a warm hug. Cable-knit or ribbed sweaters work best because the pattern mimics a chunky scarf or hat. This is a no-sew project if you use fabric glue, though a needle and thread make it sturdier.

Materials: one white or cream cable-knit sweater, polyester fiberfill, a small piece of orange felt, two black buttons, a colorful sock or fabric scrap for the scarf, and a hot glue gun or fabric glue.

Instructions: Cut a rectangular piece from the sweater, about 10 inches by 12 inches (or larger for a bigger snowman). Fold it in half with right sides together and glue or sew the side and bottom edges, leaving the top open. Turn it right side out. Stuff with fiberfill until plump. Gather the top opening and tie it off with a piece of yarn or a rubber band. Use another piece of yarn to cinch the middle for the head. Glue on felt nose, button eyes, and a fabric scarf.

Time: 30–45 minutes. Difficulty: Easy. Customization: Use a patterned sweater for a boho look, or add a small pom-pom hat made from a sweater sleeve. Display: Set on a rocking chair, entryway bench, or as a soft accent on a bed. Budget alternative: Thrift stores often sell sweaters for a dollar or two. Helpful tip: If you’re sewing, use a zigzag stitch so the knit doesn’t unravel.
