2. Mason Jar Snowman Luminary

2
Mason jars and winter go together like mittens and snow. This luminary turns a plain jar into a glowing snowman face that casts a warm, inviting light across your porch or mantel. It’s especially lovely when grouped in threes at different heights.

Materials: clean mason jar (any size), white acrylic paint or white tissue paper and decoupage glue, black paint or vinyl for eyes and mouth, orange paint or a small carrot-shaped piece of felt, twine or ribbon, and a battery-operated tea light or fairy lights.

Instructions: For a frosted look, paint the outside of the jar with two thin coats of white acrylic, letting each dry. Alternatively, tear white tissue paper into small pieces and decoupage them onto the jar. Once dry, paint or stick on two black circle eyes, a small orange triangle nose, and a dotted black smile. Wrap twine around the rim for a scarf. Place a battery tea light inside. Never use a real candle if the jar is painted or lined with paper.

Time: 30–40 minutes plus drying. Difficulty: Easy. Customization: Add a top hat made from black felt and cardboard, or paint rosy cheeks with a bit of pink. Display: Line a windowsill, porch step, or holiday tablescape. Budget alternative: Skip the paint and use white school glue mixed with a little water for a translucent frost. Helpful tip: If you want a more opaque look, paint the inside of the jar instead—just be careful not to get paint on the rim where you’ll handle it.
