5. Hand-Sewn Felt Reindeer Ornaments

5
For anyone who likes a needle in hand, felt reindeer are a quiet pleasure. Felt does not fray, holds shape, and takes embroidery nicely.

What you need: wool or wool-blend felt in tan or camel, matching thread, embroidery floss, a small amount of stuffing, beads or French knots for eyes, and a ribbon loop.

Draw a simple reindeer silhouette on paper and cut two felt pieces from it. Stitch small details — eyes, a nose, a few lines on the antlers — onto the front piece before joining. Place the pieces together and blanket stitch around the edge, pausing to add a light pinch of stuffing and the ribbon loop before closing the last inch.

Time: 40 to 60 minutes for a first attempt, faster after that. Difficulty: intermediate.

These are the ornaments that get saved. Make one a year with the date stitched on the back, and in a decade you have a timeline of your family’s tree. Solid colors keep them classic; add a plaid ribbon or a tiny embroidered snowflake for personality.
